ISF Projects

Current ISF Projects:

ISF has undertaken several programs across different sectors. We have chosen three of these, which give an overview of the scale and scope of our activities:

1. Girls Going to School initiative

With ISF’s belief that education is the key to holistic development and empowerment and that an educated girl is the foundation of a healthy and progressive nation, the first phase of the initiative focuses on this critical ingredient. In the year 2006, ISF embarked on the “Girls Going to School”(GGS) initiative, a unique programme being done in partnership with like minded grassroots NGOs across Delhi.  Collectively this partnership will have a much greater impact than the actions by any one organization.
The initiative seeks to create a sustainable model which will ensure the successful completion of primary education of girls through relevant and quality education in a span of five years.  It focuses on addressing discrimination issues that lead to gender disparity in education amongst the underprivileged sections of society in urban settings.

The initiative seeks to address two kinds of roadblocks that come between girls and education:
  • Attitudinal, Economic & Socio-cultural blocks
  • Gaps in systemic issues and process of education

2. Jan Jagriti-- An Integrated slum development programme.
Jan Jagriti is an ISF initiative touching the lives of 1500 families of the Moti Lal Nehru Camp, Munirka, New Delhi. The project is supported by Children's Hope Inc. It partners with the NGO Vidya for Education, Intel Technology and NIIT for Computer Education, Ranbaxy Pharmaceuticals for Health and the Municipal Corporation of Delhi for Sanitation. ISF has enabled the following:

  • Remedial and computer education for children and youth.
  • Non-formal education/streamlining of non-school going children into regular schools.
  • Vocational guidance/training for skill development amongst youth through Shramik Vidya Peeth.
  • Access to free health care by a mobile medical van staffed with a doctor and nurse.
  • Health Awareness programmes on Reproductive Health (RCH), STD and AIDS prevention.
  • Counseling for women and adolescents.
  • Effective waste management and sensitization of slum dwellers on cleanliness and personal and public hygiene.
  • Conversion of open-air waste dump into a playground for children.
  • Construction of roads and toilets by MCD, maintained by the residents.

3. Swayam Sudhar Shiksha Project:
Designed by ISF and supported by Xansa, this project has evolved from the "ADOPT A SCHOOL PROGRAMME" initiative to upgrade the existing standards of education and provide infrastructure support to government schools. As a pilot project, benefiting 2100 students of the Primary and Junior wings of a Government school in Harola village of Noida, Uttar Pradesh, the following were initiated:

  • Training for trainers in Hindi reading skills, for the reading skills programme.
  • Computer literacy for more than 500 students of this school and installation of curriculum based software.
  • Construction of toilet and drinking water facility.
  • Home Science classes in Cutting, Tailoring, Cooking, Arts and Craft.
  • Painting competitions and development of best entries selected into greeting cards for sale at Corporate houses.
  • Career counseling workshop.
  • Capacity building and support for achievers of Class VIII, for admission into the next higher level in other schools.
  • Summer workshops in computer education, arts and craft, music, English conversation etc.
  • Exhibition cum sale of handcrafted items for a Diwali Mela organized at a corporate office.

4. Vahini Shakti- Income generation project for economic empowerment of women:
This project aims to empower underprivileged women by training them as commercial drivers of four-wheelers. This project has made a dent in this male dominated profession while providing women with livelihood options that deviate from the stereotype roles played by women. The Transport Department, Government of Delhi, The Institute of Driving, Training and Research (IDTR), Delhi Police and the Mega Cab Company are supporting this project. Various aspects of the training modules and the organisations implementing them are:

  • Programmes on confidence building - ISF.
  • Training of driving of commercial and domestic vehicles - IDTR.
  • Technical know-how related to vehicles - IDTR.
  • Self defence skills - Delhi Police.
  • Training for administering first aid - Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital.
  • Apprenticeship and placement - Mega Cab.
This project encourages women to forge ahead with courage, determination and zeal to take up challenges. The successful women have been placed as trainee/apprentice drivers at Mega Cab, a renowned 24-hour taxi service in the Capital.
