ISF NEWS

March 2004 - August 2004

Hello friends,

We are delighted to inform you that we have launched another initiative, a partnership between the IDBI bank and our Foundation, called the citizenidbibank.org. The objective of the citizenidbibank.org is to be a bridge between those who want to bring about a change and those who are working on the change process. The website is a joint intiative of our two organisations. This venture aims to assist NGOs in catering to various social causes and providing them a platform to receive information as well as donations. The website will not only promote organisations or causes, it will also have a mechanism to accept online and offline donations from anywhere in the world. It can also donate a page to write about a selected NGO and its work.

SPRING FESTIVAL OF MUSIC

This year we held a Spring Festival Jugal Bandi at the Siri Fort Auditorium, New Delhi, on the 3rd March 2004. The concert was a fusion of Carnatic and Hindustani music, with internationally acclaimed musicians who have performed in India and abroad. The music lovers of the city were enthralled by the performers.

The event was sponsored by caring corporate houses involved in community development. We would like to thank our sponsors, namely: Xansa, Mphasis, Sun Microsystems, Ernst & Young, Samtel Color Ltd., NASDAQ, Hughes, NIIT, Satyam, General Motors, QAI, Canara Bank, ABN Amro Bank, Bharat Petroleum, Motorola. We would also like to thank individuals who, aware of the urgent need to address the social concerns of the marginalised, generously supported us.

ISF Jugalbandi Concert

We participated in the TiE conference in Delhi in December 2003. We made a presentation to the delegates on the work that we are doing. Along with this we had a small fund raising activity where we sold Seasons Greeting cards made from beautiful paintings produced by the children from the Government school that we have adopted at Noida. We also sold raffle tickets to the delegates and three corporates generously donated gift prizes. We arranged for some NGOs, that we support, get stalls where they could get visibility and raise funds by having them display and sell products made by their artisans.

JAN JAGRITI PROJECT

Our work at the Motilal Nehru Camp, Munirka, New Delhi continued to impact the community under the Saral Shiksha (education), Jan Arogya (health care) and Jan Suvidha (infrastructure improvement) programmes. Some of the highlights follow:

The open garbage dump in the middle of the community slum was an eye sore, health hazard and a haven for scavenging dogs and pigs. It was not a pretty sight! Something had to be done and fast. Persistent efforts to work hand in hand with the Municipal Corporation of Delhi's 'Bhagidari Concept' led to the successful transformation of the area into a public park. A public toilet was constructed, which was a great relief especially to the women and girl children. These developments triggered the enthusiasm of local youth who have since been showing personal involvement by way of spearheading a garbage clearance drive.

The Saral Shiksha has been set up with the prime objective of mainstreaming the non school going children into formal schools, besides curtailing the drop out rates among school going children. With this end in view, the remedial and non-formal education centres have been set up besides capacity building of the teachers and field workers of this project. This project reaches out to 230 school going and non-school going children and has taken into consideration all the holistic issues related to overall development of the beneficiaries.
The activities related to health include a Cancer detection camp for women conducted by the Family Welfare Foundation of India. An upgraded nutritious meal program was started for the children of the Saral Shiksha Project.

Do let us know if you know any woman who is interested in becoming a driver. We are also compiling a data list of potential employers. So if you or any of your friends need a woman driver, please give us a call.

SWAYAM SUDHAR SHIKSHA PROJECT

The activities in the Government Primary and Junior School, Harola, Noida, U.P continue with vigour. Despite unexpected interruptions and disruptions over which we have little control, the school is a happening place.

In a school having 2100 students with no toilets, the children of the primary wing now have the luxury of using toilets constructed by us. This has resulted in the drastic difference by way of removing the stench caused by its absence. It is likely to have an impact on absenteeism and drop out rates as well, especially in the case of girls.

The school depends on the municipal water supply, which is woefully inadequate. To augment the water supply, we have built a bore well to tap ground water and provided connection through taps.

That school is not all work but also play, our field staff had given special coaching in athletics for participating in the Inter School sports competitions at the District and Block levels. The children romped home with either individual or team trophies at the meet.

A grand Diwali sale cum exhibition of artifacts produced by the school children was held at the premises of our corporate sponsor. A workshop on career guidance was held in the month of May 2003. The girl children were encouraged to pursue activities like cooking and tailoring.

The computer lab with 11 computers has been upgraded with the provision of curriculum based software for teaching Science and Mathematics. A CD pool has been created with contributions from M/s CyberMedia (I) Pvt. Ltd.
