Causes to Support - Education
District
wise Kottayam (Kerala) has the highest literacy percentage of 95.72, while Jhabua
(Madhya Pradesh) has the lowest at just 19.01%. The literacy rate in 2001 has
been recorded at 65.38% as against 52.21% in 1991. The investment in
education has remained far short of the target of 6% of the national income. Non-government
and voluntary efforts have begun to play a major role not only in the development
of educational material and processes, but also in involving and motivating the
community. The combined effort of both the government and the community have not
however been able to make an appreciable difference in the literacy rates of the
country. There is an urgent need to act. Issues

The
gap in male-female literacy rates has decreased from 24.84 in 1991 Census to 21.70
percentage point in 2001.The struggle to enhance access to education by women
